Canada is one of the best countries to migrate to and 300 000 people who come there every year prove it. But if your main goal is not just to stay for a short-time period, but remain in this country and settle down, you will need to get a permanent resident (PR) or a Canadian citizen status. There are specific requirements and steps that we will take you through.
For becoming a Canadian citizen, you need to get a PR status first. As a PR, you have the right to live in or outside Canada and also the majority of Canadian citizens' rights apply to you. However, you are not eligible to vote and you will remain a citizen of another country until you apply for and receive a Canadian citizen status.
If you are already a PR of Canada, for becoming a Canadian citizen you must meet these requirements:
- Have lived in Canada as a PR for at least 1,095 days out of the 5 years before you apply;
- Have filed your taxes for at least 3 years during the last 5 years;
- Not have any prohibitions related to criminal activity within or outside Canada;
- Show that you are familiar with Canada’s culture, history, laws, etc. by passing the citizenship test;
- Provide proof that you are able to understand and speak in 1 of Canada's official languages (either English or French);
It takes approximately 12 months to process the application and if it is approved, your next step is to take the Canadian citizenship test and go to an interview to prove your language skills. If you pass these stages successfully, your final step to become a Canadian citizen is to take the Oath of Citizenship.
